In-demand frontline emergency care jobs are AI- and recession-proof.

Front Range Community College is launching a new associate degree program in paramedicine that will give students and working emergency medical technicians a clear path to career advancement and higher paying jobs. With more than 350 annual job postings statewide and 50 local agencies hiring around the state, there is a high need for well-trained paramedics who have the skills to care for Coloradans when they need it most.

Due to an aging population, demand in Northern Colorado is growing for skilled paramedics, who make approximately $20,000 dollars more annually than emergency medical technicians (EMTs), according to data from Lightcast. FRCC’s new paramedic Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree—offered at the college’s Larimer Campus in Fort Collins—provides a direct path into rewarding, high-impact careers on the front line of emergency care.

Critical Service, Upwardly Mobile Careers

FRCC’s paramedic degree will give students hands-on experience performing life-saving procedures, while teaching them how to lead emergency response efforts. The new program will launch students directly into rewarding careers with long-term stability and opportunities to move upward into supervisory positions.

“Careers in emergency medical services are a smart choice—they offer great pay and an accessible entry point,” said Angie Peach, the college’s dean of health sciences & wellness. “This new degree makes FRCC an excellent, affordable route to jobs saving lives on the front lines of emergency medicine.”

Hands-On Experience

At FRCC, students will train under the supervision of experienced faculty members using cutting-edge equipment in the college’s state-of-the-art health care career training facility. They will learn through classroom practice and gain firsthand experience working with ambulance and emergency department professionals.

Students will also complete clinical internships with:

  • Ambulance services
  • Fire departments
  • Emergency departments

Recession- and AI-Proof Jobs

Paramedics provide a service that society can’t function without—and their status as essential workers makes these jobs highly resistant to economic downturns. Medical emergencies don’t stop during a recession. And many EMS systems are funded by local government, insulating them from economic swings.

Paramedic jobs are also among the most AI-resistant careers there are. Artificial intelligence can’t drive an ambulance, carry a patient down stairs, start an IV or perform CPR. And paramedics must constantly adapt their protocols to complex real-world situations. The job is fundamentally hands-on, making it essentially AI proof.

Stable Long-Term Careers

Paramedics have a higher level of training and an increased scope of practice beyond the role of an Emergency Medical  Technician (EMT). Expanding on the college’s highly respected EMT program, the paramedic degree includes hands-on lessons in critical patient care, advanced life support and serving in a leadership role during medical emergencies in pre-hospital settings. Students will also gain real-life experience through extensive clinical rotations in hospitals and ambulances when the program begins this fall.

Short-Term Certificates “Stack” to Build a Degree

Students in FRCC’s emergency medical services program can complete the new paramedic degree—or either of the college’s EMT certificates—individually. Or they can use a “stacking” approach to build their degree by starting with the EMT certificate, continuing to the clinical EMT certificate and then completing the Paramedic AAS degree.

Complete either credential on its own—or stack them to advance step-by-step toward a degree:

• Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certificate

• Clinical EMT Certificate

• Paramedic AAS Degree

Who Is This Program For?

  • Current or prospective EMT students
  • First responders
  • Medical assistants
  • Anyone interested in patient care without pursuing nursing school

Paramedic Career Data

  • Top Northern Colorado employers: UCHealth, Thompson Valley EMS, Banner Health, Greeley Fire Department
  • Opportunities for career advancement: EMT → Paramedic → Supervisor
  • Stable, long-term demand for emergency professionals
  • Multiple employment settings, including ambulance services, hospitals, fire departments and air medical transport
