Colorado Community College System honors 14 FRCC students—and their peers around the state—for their inspiring achievements.

The Colorado Community College System (CCCS) recently paid tribute to top students from schools around the state during the system’s 2026 Student Excellence Awards. Fourteen distinguished students from Front Range Community College were chosen for this year’s honors.

Three award categories recognized students for their academic accomplishments, exemplary leadership and commitment to inclusive excellence:

  • The Phi Theta Kappa All-Colorado Academic Team Award specifically recognizes the academic accomplishments of high-achieving student members of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society from across the state.
  • The Rising Star Award recognizes students who have increased the level and quality of student engagement on their college campus.
  • The Inclusive Excellence Champion Award recognizes students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion on their college campus.

Many of the awardees have expressed aspirations to continue their advocacy work beyond their time in college. Many are pursuing careers that will help heal and empower communities in fields such as health care, veterinary science, social services and education.

All-Colorado Academic Team

Ten Front Range Community College students have earned places on the 2026 All-Colorado Academic Team. The team recognizes high-achieving students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor, combined with leadership and service.

Leolani Bergh 

Leolani Bergh is pursuing an Associate of Science in pharmaceutical sciences at Front Range Community College. She chose this path out of a passion for health care and a desire to make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives. As a pharmacy technician at Boulder Community Health, she has gained hands-on experience in sterile compounding and patient care, strengthening her interest in pharmacy and its blend of science, precision and compassion. 

Leolani is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society, where she has been recognized for academic excellence and leadership. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while balancing work and school, demonstrating strong discipline and commitment. She takes pride in being a dependable and engaged member of both her workplace and academic community. 

As a nontraditional student, Leolani has returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose while balancing work and home responsibilities. After graduating from FRCC, she plans to transfer to the University of Colorado to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD). Long term, she hopes to specialize in hospital pharmacy and continue serving her community through compassionate, patient-centered care. 

Quynh-Anh Do 

Quynh-Anh Do is pursuing an Associate of Science degree at Front Range Community College with a focus on psychology. She plans to transfer to University of Colorado Boulder to earn her Bachelor of Science in psychology, with a long-term goal of completing a PhD and supporting others on their healing journeys. She is drawn to psychology for its ability to bridge science and story, believing that rigorous research and human connection are powerful partners. 

A first-generation college student working full-time, Quynh-Anh is actively involved in TRIO Student Support Services, GlobalMinded’s Emergent Leaders Group and Recovery 2.0. She has an accepted speaking engagement at the GlobalMinded conference and facilitates a free 12-step codependency recovery program, recently completing her third group. Her recognitions include Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Transfer Scholarship semifinalist, PTK All-State Coca-Cola Scholar and Colorado Community College System PTK Honoree. 

Quynh-Anh has delivered a keynote at FRCC’s Enrollment Management and Student Success Retreat, received a PRISM award, and led a first-generation workshop titled Outsiders to Trailblazers. After attending PTK Catalyst 2026 in Baltimore, she remains committed to creating spaces where students feel seen, supported and empowered to succeed. 

Natalie Freeman 

Natalie Freeman is pursuing her associate degree in nursing (ADN) while concurrently working toward her bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) at Front Range Community College. With a background in anthropology, fine arts and cultural heritage, she chose nursing to move beyond studying humanity to directly serving it. She is especially drawn to patient advocacy and hopes to support individuals and families through significant moments and life transitions. 

Natalie is a 4.0 student and an active member of the Student Nurses Association. She is also a Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) scholar, a Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) scholar and a former Reisher Scholar. Her involvement in volunteer and fundraising initiatives reflects her commitment to community-centered care and health equity. 

Outside of health care, Natalie is a Latin and heels dancer and a visual artist. She has completed both private and public mural commissions and focuses on medical and scientific illustration, integrating art and science to deepen her understanding of the human body and patient experience. 

Over the past year, she has faced significant personal challenges, including the loss of her aunt while managing an intensive nursing program and two jobs. After graduating, Natalie plans to work as a registered nurse in a hospital setting, with interests in ICU, NICU or labor and delivery, and to advocate for equitable, evidence-based care. 

Alejandro Garcia 

Alejandro Garcia is pursuing an Associate of Engineering Science in electrical engineering at Front Range Community College’s Westminster Campus, where he will graduate on May 14. He plans to transfer to Colorado School of Mines to complete his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. A first-generation student originally from Guatemala, Alejandro is committed to academic excellence, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while actively engaging in leadership and research. 

He serves as secretary of the Engineering Club and as captain and lead of the Robotics Challenge through the NASA Colorado Space Grant Consortium, where he leads the development of a bio-inspired autonomous rover. He is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and TRIO Student Support Services and works as a student assistant in the mathematics and engineering department and Dean’s Office. 

Outside of FRCC, Alejandro founded the Academic Community of Exact Sciences, a network supporting over 500 students in Guatemala through STEAM-based tutoring. His achievements include recognition in the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, a regional rocket competition and the Ibero-American Biology Olympiad. 

He aspires to specialize in embedded systems and IoT security, pursue a PhD and ultimately launch a company focused on secure, real-time digital systems while expanding access to education for future generations. 

Nicholas Goodwin 

Nicholas Goodwin is a first-generation Front Range Community College student studying psychology with the goal of transferring to the University of Colorado Denver to pursue his master’s degree and become a therapist specializing in teen and young adult anxiety. 

Outside of school and work, Nic enjoys playing video games online with friends and skating at local skate parks. He values meaningful conversations with others and is passionate about connecting with people. 

In the future, Nic hopes to open his own private practice, where he can support and guide young people through their mental health journeys. 

Alexa Mojarro 

Alexa Mojarro is a proud first-generation Mexican American originally from South Florida, dedicated to serving her community through health care and public service. As a veteran of the United States Air Force, she developed a strong foundation in discipline, resilience and leadership that continues to guide her personal and professional journey. Following her military service, she became a certified Emergency Medical Technician, where she discovered her passion for patient care and supporting others during critical moments. 

In addition to her health care experience, Alexa is a certified sommelier, reflecting her appreciation for hospitality, culture and lifelong learning. Her diverse background allows her to connect with individuals from all walks of life and approach challenges with both adaptability and compassion. 

Alexa is currently applying to the nursing program at Front Range Community College, where she hopes to expand her clinical knowledge and continue serving others. Her long-term goal is to become a registered nurse and provide empathetic, patient-centered care. She is committed to building a career that blends her dedication to service, her health care experience and her passion for making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

Alyssa Proffitt 

Alyssa Proffitt is a 3.92 GPA student who completed her associate degree at Front Range Community College and is now continuing her studies at University of Colorado Boulder, where she is pursuing Elementary Education with a TESOL minor. As a member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), she demonstrates strong academic commitment while balancing the demands of being both a full-time student and full-time employee. 

Alyssa is passionate about supporting emergent bilingual students and creating inclusive classrooms where language is viewed as an asset. Her interest is grounded in hands-on experience working with multilingual learners, where she has seen how meaningful relationships and targeted language support can directly influence student success. 

Beyond the classroom, Alyssa works as a Program Lead and STEM curriculum developer with the Boy Scouts of America, designing inquiry-based learning experiences that foster engagement and curiosity among youth. 

Looking ahead, Alyssa plans to pursue a master’s degree at Columbia University, with the goal of working in curriculum development or school administration. She is committed to creating inclusive, empowering educational environments that have a lasting impact on future generations of students. 

Bethan Pulham 

Bethan Pulham is a recent summa cum laude graduate of the Larimer Campus at Front Range Community College, where she earned her degree in Veterinary Technology. During her time at FRCC, she received multiple scholarships and was honored with the Program Director’s Award, which covers the cost of the Veterinary Technician National Exam. She was also selected for a Colorado Community College System Student Excellence Award as a Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honoree, recognizing her hard work and dedication. 

Bethan is excited to begin her career in veterinary medicine and hopes to work in an emergency or specialty clinic, where she can care for animals in critical need. Her academic achievements reflect both her passion for the field and her commitment to excellence. 

Outside of her professional goals, Bethan enjoys spending time with her husband, whom she married in December, and their three cats. She is looking forward to an upcoming move to Portland to be closer to family and begin the next chapter of her life and career. 

Jessica White 

Jessica White is a dedicated student at Front Range Community College, where she earned a 3.8 GPA and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. She has completed prerequisite coursework toward a career in dental hygiene, a field she chose due to her strong interest in patient care and the connection between oral health and overall wellness. 

During her time at FRCC, Jessica completed rigorous coursework in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and general, organic and biochemistry. She approaches challenging material with curiosity, integrity and determination, contributing positively to collaborative learning environments. These qualities supported her acceptance into the competitive Dental Hygiene Program at the Community College of Denver, which she will begin in the fall. 

Jessica has balanced demanding science coursework with personal responsibilities, strengthening her resilience and time-management skills. She is especially interested in how oral health care education and prevention can improve patients’ lives. 

After completing her program, Jessica plans to work in a clinical setting, providing compassionate, patient-centered care while giving back to her community through education and accessible dental services. 

Ireland Zwickel 

Ireland Zwickel is currently studying at Front Range Community College’s Boulder County campus and is a proud TRIO Scholar. She plans to transfer to Colorado State University to earn her bachelor’s degree in early childhood professions, followed by a master’s degree in teacher licensure. Her passion for education began early, inspired by time spent in her mother’s classroom, where she discovered the lasting impact educators can have on young lives. 

Ireland remains actively engaged in her academic community, both inside and outside the classroom. Through TRIO, she has gained valuable mentorship, resources and support that have strengthened her academic journey and contributed to her recognition as a motivated and dedicated student. 

Her path has not been without challenges. Ireland has navigated college while grieving the loss of her father and without strong guidance, experiences that have deepened her resilience and determination. She uses this motivation to excel and honor his memory each day, with the goal of becoming an elementary school teacher. 

Rising Star Award

This award is sponsored by the State Student Advisory Council and recognizes students who have increased the level and quality of student engagement on campus. The students selected to receive this award may have facilitated meaningful engagement by either broadening the scope of student engagement or by deepening the engagement of other students around a particular issue or initiative.

Dominick Antonelli 

Dominick Antonelli is a first-generation TRIO student at Front Range Community College who maintains a 4.0 GPA while pursuing multiple areas of study and creative work. He previously earned an associate degree in Integrative health and holds a National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching certification, reflecting his commitment to supporting others through holistic practices. 

Dominick is currently studying in the music and recording arts program, building on more than 21 years of musical experience. He is also training to become an Acudetox teacher, a five-needle ear acupuncture protocol used to support stress, anxiety, PTSD, addiction and trauma. His work often blends sound and integrative healing, and he has led workshops that combine both disciplines. 

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dominick is preparing for a 2.5-month solo summer music tour, a milestone that reflects both his dedication and creative growth. His experiences have shaped a deep commitment to living with curiosity, respect, and service, and he strives to bring inspiration and support to others through daily interactions. 

Looking ahead, he hopes to help reshape the music industry’s standards for care and explore the use of sound in intentional, cellular healing. 

Gabriel Aviles 

Gabriel Aviles is completing his general engineering associate degree at Front Range Community College’s Westminster Campus. A first-generation student and veteran, he returned to school after serving six years in the United States Navy. He brings a mission-focused mindset to his studies, with a strong interest in advancing renewable power solutions. 

After relocating to a new state, Gabriel quickly became a campus leader. He serves as president of the Engineering Club and as a peer mentor in TRIO Student Support Services, supporting fellow students as they transition into college life. He also continues his service as a Leading Petty Officer in the Navy Reserves while volunteering with the city of Thornton. 

This fall, Gabriel will transfer to the University of Colorado Boulder to pursue a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics. He aspires to become a project manager in the renewable energy sector, combining technical expertise and leadership to create meaningful, sustainable impact. 

Alexsandra Varela 

Alexsandra Varela is a business student at Front Range Community College’s Boulder County Campus, working toward her associate degree with plans to transfer to the University of Colorado Boulder Leeds School of Business. She is passionate about leadership, entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for growth within her community, with a focus on people-centered leadership. 

She currently serves as store manager at Art Mart Gifts, where she oversees daily operations, staff development and inventory management. On campus, she is actively involved in TRIO Student Support Services, works in the Multicultural Center, and participates in the LEADS program, strengthening her leadership and advocacy skills. She also serves as a community connector-in-residence with the City of Boulder, building relationships with historically underrepresented communities. 

A first-generation college student who returned to the United States from Mexico in 2021, Alexsandra balances full-time work and academics while maintaining strong performance. After graduating, she plans to continue her education and pursue a career in business leadership, with the goal of creating inclusive opportunities for others. 

Inclusive Excellence Award

This award is sponsored by the State Student Advisory Council and recognizes students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion on their campus. The students selected to receive this award may be involved in supporting or creating diversity activities and services; working to address issues of inequity; expanding the scope of inclusivity on campus; and/or demonstrating advocacy for social justice and intercultural awareness.

Emmit Marker

Emmit Marker is pursuing a certification in wellness coaching while completing an associate degree with plans to transfer into social work at Front Range Community College. Drawn to roles centered on connection and advocacy, they are building a path focused on supporting individuals and communities through meaningful life transitions. 

They are an engaged student recognized by SummitStone, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and FRCC College for speaking on panels and fostering collaboration across campus and community spaces. By consistently showing up and listening, they have built strong relationships with peers, staff and local organizations. 

They are actively involved in LGBTQ+ and disability-focused peer support groups and committees, offering a dependable and approachable presence for others. Through SAGA, they organized movie nights exploring queer film history, and they continue to work with the Harmony Library to sustain a banned books club that encourages thoughtful dialogue and inclusion. 

Outside of academics, they enjoy swimming, archery and spending time in nature, often turning to these activities to maintain balance during busy periods. 

Returning to Colorado has allowed them to support their grandmother while gaining greater independence. Balancing personal goals with increasing caregiving responsibilities has been challenging, but they remain committed to growth. They plan to continue their education in social work and pursue a future centered on care, advocacy and community connection.
