Front Range Community College has received a certificate of appreciation from the Internal Revenue Service for 10 years of tax-return assistance to low-income and senior-citizen taxpayers.
The Larimer Campus has been a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site during tax season – late January through mid-April. VITA provides free tax help to people who in a recent year earned $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited-English taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their tax returns.
A second program, Tax Counseling for the Elderly, offers free tax help for those 60 and older
FRCC accounting students receive IRS certification to provide free basic tax return preparation with electronic filing.
Over the years, volunteers have assisted thousands of taxpayers file returns that have generated hundreds of thousands of dollars of refunds and Earned Income Tax Credits to qualified individuals.
“You played a critical role in helping taxpayers comply with the tax laws, obtain the benefits of deductions and credits and gain valuable financial insight to assist them with building assets,” wrote Frank Nolden, IRS director of stakeholder partnerships, education, and communication.
The Larimer Campus will be a tax-assistance site for the 2016 tax season, starting in late January 2017.
