Sam Lawrence and Maryann Lasco, students at Front Range Community College’s Larimer Campus in Fort Collins, have been named to the Phi Theta Kappa All-Colorado Academic Team.

The scholars were honored in Denver. They are among 24 students from 12 community colleges in Colorado named to the team.

They were nominated based on their academic achievement, leadership, and community service. As part of the state team, they also have been nominated for membership consideration on the All-USA Academic Team for Community Colleges. Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for community colleges.

About Sam Lawrence

Lawrence’s All-USA application hides nothing. He honestly describes what it is like to be an autistic college student.

“I want to make a difference,” Lawrence writes. “I do not know if my greatest contribution will come from what I do or just who I am. Sometimes just being brave enough to show up is what defines greatness.”

Lawrence has shown up and earned certificates in Wildlife and Forestry and, soon, an A.A.S. in Natural Resources. He also volunteers extensively with Fort Collins Adaptive Recreation Program. Grateful for what he received in adaptive programs earlier in life, now Lawrence is giving back.

Losing her job was the door of opportunity for Lasco. She started to pursue full-time what she was chasing part-time: an Associate of Arts degree with designation in sociology.

Mission nearly accomplished, with a 4.0 GPA to boot. Next stop: Colorado State University.

Participating in the Pathways Leadership Program on campus led to an internship that further cemented Lasco’s desire to become a sociology researcher focusing on ways to strengthen families and communities.

Family is a priority, as she and her husband have a blended family of seven children, two of whom also are students at FRCC. Lasco is vice president of scholarships for the campus chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.
