Former Peace Corps volunteer Elizabeth Mahoney named 2025 New Century Scholar.
FRCC nursing student Elizabeth Mahoney—a former Peace Corps volunteer—has been awarded the prestigious national New Century Workforce Pathway Scholarship. She is the only scholar selected from the state of Colorado.
Lizzy was chosen from a national pool of nearly 2,100 applicants from more than 1,300 college campuses across the US. Only one New Century Workforce Scholar was selected from each state. She was the top scoring applicant in the state in the career-technical track, earning her the New Century Workforce Pathway award.
New Century Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.
More About Elizabeth:
Lizzy is a former Peace Corps volunteer who served in the rural mountains of Rwanda promoting maternal and child health. While there, she organized community outreach activities and non-communicable disease screenings throughout surrounding villages, screening more than 100 people per visit. She also worked to monitor childhood growth, screening for malnutrition and often seeing 20-40 children each day.
She decided to pursue nursing because of her time as a medical assistant here in Colorado. Lizzy is passionate about showing up for those within her community and being an advocate for people from all walks of life. Her fierce determination to help others and love of science has led her to pursue a degree in nursing from FRCC’s Larimer campus.
Before FRCC, Lizzy worked as a medical assistant at a reproductive health center. During that time, she fell in love with working directly with patients, providing education and resources, and making patients feel at ease throughout their interactions. She loved her job but wanted to do more for the patients. She knew that becoming a nurse would allow her to provide the care she wanted. That passion for making a direct difference in someone’s day coupled with a desire to keep learning pushed her back to school.
With her graduation quickly approaching, May 2025, she is excited to hit the ground running and join the work force. She hopes to eventually complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
