Students, faculty, and instructor volunteers at Front Range Community College-Brighton Center assisted low- and moderate-income taxpayers in filing tax returns to claim more than $500,000 in refunds to the taxpayers in 2015.
FRCC partnered with Denver-based Piton Foundation in Tax Help Colorado. At FRCC-Brighton Center’s free tax site, IRS-certified students filed 244 returns, helping local taxpayers claim $512,126 in refunds.
Many of the taxpayers who visited FRCC-Brighton Center were eligible for tax benefits for working families with children such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). One of the nation’s most successful anti-poverty tools, the EITC promotes employment while providing valuable refunds to minimum-wage earners who oftentimes struggle to make ends meet for their families. Tax Help Colorado volunteers at FRCC-Brighton Center helped working families claim $185,753 in EITC refunds.
The taxpayers claimed $454,047 in federal refunds, which includes the EITC, and $58,079 in state refunds.
FRCC also had a Tax Help Colorado site at its Westminster Campus, assisting 735 taxpayers in claiming more than $1.4 million in refunds.
