Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate in Interior Design Program at Community College in Fort Collins Earns NKBA Accreditation

The Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate in the Interior Design program at the Front Range Community College campus in Fort Collins has earned accreditation from the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA).

Accreditation Qualifies Graduates to Take AKBD Exam.

With accreditation, students with the Kitchen and Bath Certificate can sit for the Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer (AKBD) exam, which can be taken at the Larimer Campus Testing Center. An AKBD is a certified professional, knowledgeable in the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines with Access Standards, residential construction, space planning, materials and interior finishes to promote the health, safety, and welfare in kitchen and bath design.

“Accreditation means students seeking the Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate can be assured FRCC has quality kitchen and bath design and interior design classes,” said Nowell Vincent, program director and NKBA certified kitchen designer. “And accreditation means that professionals in the kitchen and bath industry can be assured our students received a quality certification as part of their kitchen and bath design and interior design education.”

NKBA accreditation was created to serve the professional needs of the kitchen and bath industry and to ensure consistent, quality education for students who want to become kitchen or bathroom design professionals. The NKBA recognizes 60 colleges, universities, and technical schools in North America whose kitchen and bath curriculum meet the educational standards established by the NKBA.

Standards include the knowledge and skills necessary for competent practice in the profession and are divided into four categories: Planning and Design, Construction/Mechanical Systems, Business Management and Products/Materials.

FRCC meets stringent NKBA standards.

A college seeking accreditation must meet stringent NKBA standards in each category. FRCC submitted a self-study and an analysis of competencies related to the categories. An evaluation team of educators and industry professionals made classroom observations, reviewed curriculum, viewed student projects, and interviewed students, faculty, and administration.

Accreditation good for five years.

NKBA accredited programs are evaluated with respect to mission, administration, curriculum, faculty, and resources to determine eligibility and the students’ aptitude toward fulfilling the NKBA’s required competencies. Each year, the NKBA monitors accredited colleges with the submission of student work samples based on the NKBA Student Design Competition. This process provides an outcome-based assessment. Accredited programs have a re-evaluation period of five years.

FRCC earned NKBA Accreditation by demonstrating that it meets these requirements, which represent the basis of a program the NKBA considers essential for quality education. Each student must complete classroom work and internships monitored by the educational institution, which will enhance and extend the classroom experiences and make certain that they meet the NKBA’s required student competencies.
